Total War: Shogun 2 is a strategy game set in feudal Japan. The player takes the role of one of the nine clans and tries to achieve supremacy over the country. During the campaign the winning condition is to conquer and hold Tokyo; additionally to conquering a certain number of provinces (the exact number changes depending on if the long or short campaign is played). Just like with all entries in the Total War series, the gameplay is split into a turn-based strategy map and real-time tactics fights.
During the strategy mode the player needs to manage his provinces, e.g. by researching (called "mastering the arts") new military and civilian achievements or training special agents like ninjas for assassinations or monks to demoralise the enemy. Each of those units can be improved when they gain experience. Additionally every character can have up to three supporting people who bring further bonuses. Other important factors are trade, diplomacy and the balance between the eight resources. During the campaign the player has not only to take care of the other clans (which will declare war simultaneously if the player is too successful), but also 37 other factions.
If the player attacks another province or gets attacked, the game switches to real-time combat screen. Here the player needs to use his units cleverly, because ever unit has certain advantages and disadvantages against other units. Besides country combat there are also sieges and sea fights. If the player wants to concentrate on the strategy mode, the battles can be calculated automatically.
