Unknown Horizons is a freeware, open-source strategy game similar to the ones in the Anno series, where the main goal is to establish a colony in an archipelago and expand its territory settlement and economy.
The game starts with a single seaship carrying the equipment necessary to build trading docks on the coast. Once this trading post is constructed, new buildings can be erected around the visible territory. Resource-gathering buildings like lumberjack's logging camps, fishermen wharfs and hunter cabins are required to collect and store basic construction and sustenance reserves.
The buildings cost a combination of resources, with the amount of money and other materials remaining displayed at the top of the screen. All these features, as well as housing, main squares and others, have to be built and connected through a road network, that automatically shows the settlers going back and forth carrying resources. Trading with passing ships is a major way to generate new revenue and accumulate more resources.
There's a tutorial included as a campaign teaching the basics. Random maps can be generated for single-player games, and there's support for multiplayer games through internet servers as well.
