Urban Terror is a free team-based shooter originally started as a total conversion for Quake III. The latest release, 4.0, includes ioUrbanTerror as the first stand-alone client in the history of the total conversion.
The game is focused on realism, with weapons that have recoil, exist in real-life, a decrease in accuracy when players shoot while moving, and the need to reload after a magazine has been expended. The players' actions are limited through the use of stamina and a damage model covering various parts of the body. When wounded, players are slowed down until the areas hit have been bandaged. The gameplay is similar to Rainbow Six and Counter-Strike, but with the inclusion of the fast-paced Quake movement, with strafe jumping, but also wall jumping, ledge climbing and power sliding (4.0). In general, damage is also less severe compared to the aforementioned games. At all times, players can only carry a limited amount of weapons.
Although the game is playable offline, it is meant to be played online with multiple people. The available game modes are free for all/deathmatch, team deathmatch, team survivor, capture the flag, capture and hold, follow the leader and bomb mode. Players spawn with a knife but can pick up weapons such as pistols, submachine guns, shotguns, rifles, machine guns and grenades, along with a kevlar vest or helmet, laser sight, silencer, night vision goggles or additional ammo and health.
