Vault Cracker: The Last Safe Melissa was once a burglar specialized in busting bank safes, and entering and stealing from other high-security places. After her son Noah is abducted, she is forced out of retirement by his captors for one specific job. Once again she joins forces with her former partner in crime, a hacker nicknamed Mouse, to accomplish the task at hand while at the same time trying to uncover the identity of the kidnappers.

Vault Cracker is a hybrid game combining hidden object challenges with adventure elements, where most of the time the objective is to collect and store several objects inside the inventory slots at the bottom, and later use them to complete certain tasks. Some of these key objects are found laying around while others are received after completing one of the hidden object scenes, where the goal is to find and click on all the items listed at the bottom of the screen. The hint menu is a safe dial at the bottom-left, showing the position of one of the required items, but taking some time to recharge after use.

Most scenes have interactive hotspots, showing a series of circles at the top-right when activated. These circles display gray pictures of all the items necessary to complete one of the pending tasks. In order to complete a task, the player has to find all the required objects and drag and drop them from the scene or inventory to their respective circle. The circles display a red background when their items are not available in the scene, something that usually happens when they are waiting to be received after solving a hidden object challenge.

Mini-games appear in some scenes, taking place on a separate screen where a mechanism of some sort has to be manipulated to solve them. They are related to the plot, occurring at certain points where Melissa has to pick locks, open safes and do other similar actions. They can be optionally skipped after a few minutes.
