Viy: A Story Told Anew Viy: A Story Told Anew is a FMV adventure game, meaning that it uses a recorded footage of real actors over prerendered 3D backdrops, rather than a more traditional animated approach. Other then that, it is a usual adventure game with puzzles, exploration, character interaction, item gathering and a few arcade mini games.

The game closely follows the original horror story, written by Nikolai Gogol in the XIX century and inspired by folk myths of Ukrainian people. The player assumes the role of Khoma Brut, a young philosopher from the Kyiv seminary. By an unforeseen combination of events he is tasked to read a series of psalms for three nights over a dead body of Sotnik's daughter, in order to see her safely to the other world. However, on the first night mysterious things occur, rumoured to be caused by Cossack's daughter being a witch during her life.

Despite a rather faithful reproduction of original story, the ending was altered for the game's purposes. However, the original ending is still attainable, even though it was relegated to a status of "bad ending", to use a common video game term.

During his travels, Khoma will find himself forced to play a handful of mini games. Three of them are obligatory for completing the game.
