Game Classification

The primordial cave-crawling hunting game type is visited once again, with most of the fundamentals the same: the player is searching through a randomized maze for a stinky monster, the Wumpus, which can be neutralized from an adjacent room but will end the player's game if encountered directly.

The randomly-player-relocating bats are still present; new obstacles include deadly gas pockets (replacing the traditional bottomless pit) which are given away by dead canaries, spider rooms whose webs detain the player, and river rooms which cause splashes, resulting in the Wumpus' sharp hearing causing it to change location. Further unusual details include sticks of dynamite -- for making openings in the hexagonal rooms where none exist -- and a lantern fuel gauge that decreases with every move.

The game ends when the player is killed by gas or Wumpus, the player kills the Wumpus, the player runs out of lamp fuel or ammunition (only one shot!) [source:mobygames]
