Zoo Story 2 is a follow-up to Zoo Story. Like its predecessor, it is an online-only real-time managerial simulation in which the player creates and maintains a zoo. The basic gameplay principle is similar to that of the previous game: the player purchases animals, builds various structures in the zoo (benches, kiosks, fast food restaurants, etc.), collects money from exhibits, and expands the territory of the zoo. The zoo gradually levels up, allowing purchase of new animals and items for money or gems. Like in other Story games, social interaction between players (visiting each other's zoos, sending gifts, etc.) occupies a significant portion of the gameplay.
Compared to the first installment, Zoo Story 2 offers a wider variety of animals. Fictional or extinct animals such as unicorns or mammoths can be purchased as well. Another new feature is breeding and cross-breeding. Constructing animal families bestows benefits upon the zoo. Cross-breeding may be realistic (a liger born to a lion and a tiger) or imaginary (e.g. crossing an elephant with a sea lion would produce a walrus). Building exhibits or expanding the zoo does not occur instantly, like in the predecessor, but requires a certain amount of real time to elapse.
