Zuzu was a happy little bee producing honey for the population of Zuzuland, until a swarm of pirate bumblebees started to raid the supplies, stealing and hiding barrels of sweet honey around the country. Now she must recover all the stolen honey to feed the worker bees and give them the strength to build a fortress against the invaders.
Zuzu & Pirates is a straightforward hidden object game with occasional arcade sequences. Most of the time, the objective is to collect all the items listed at the left side of the screen, with Zuzu herself replacing the cursor on locations filled with assorted paraphernalia scattered around the scenery. The hint button is a candle at the bottom-left corner, showing the position of one of the required objects when activated, but taking some time to recharge after use.
At certain points, an arcade sequence is initiated where Zuzu has to shoot the incoming pirates carrying stolen barrels of honey, with one button used for shooting and other for reloading the gun. There's a chronometer at the bottom-right corner showing the remaining time, with bonus seconds added after shooting several enemies in quick succession. Each defeated foe drops honeycombs for Zuzu's reserve, with long shots giving extra honey.
The recovered honey is stored inside honeycombs at the main menu, from where they have to be dragged and dropped on the hungry worker bees below. After being fed, the workers start to construct a castle from the bottom up in sections. The shape and size of the castle is determined by the amount of honey collected by Zuzu and distributed amongst the workers.
