Five Nights At Freddy's (FNAF) atmosphere is its true masterpiece. The game takes place in a dilapidated pizzeria, shrouded in flickering lights and distorted sounds. The silence between the creaking machinery and unsettling music only amplifies the tension. The animatronics themselves are not grotesquely monstrous, but rather unsettling parodies of childhood entertainment, their vacant eyes and decaying bodies hinting at a dark secret. This juxtaposition of the familiar and the frightening is what makes FNaF so effective at tapping into a primal fear – the subversion of innocence.
