Castle Crashers is a humorous 1-to-4-player side-scrolling beat 'em up game inspired by Double Dragon and similar titles. Players choose from one of 4 knights and do battle using medieval weapons and magic (other characters can be unlocked by various means). As enemies are defeated, the characters will level up and acquire new abilities. Finally, at the end of each stage, players must defeat a boss and then fight each other for a kiss from the rescued princess. In addition, players can fight each other in an "Arena Mode," and there is a minigame called "All You Can Quaff."
The game can be played both online, through XBLA, or offline, with multiple controllers.
On October 12th, 2006, GameTrailers aired a video of Castle Crashers which they recorded at PAX that year. The game drew criticism from a (presumably African American) mother, who thought the video depicted whites killing brown and black people (in reality, the enemies in the video are simply wearing dark robes). The phrase she used to describe the game on a voicemail left for GameTrailers ("a racist piece of equipment") is now somewhat legendary. [source:tigdb]
